Six Nations LIVE: England hero trolls Scotland, Ireland hand Wales boost | Rugby | Sport

Former Wales and British Lions captain Sam Warburton believes England's attacking tactics demonstrate a lack of ideas, but the Scotland game could be a perfect match-up for Steve Borthwick's side.

While the Red Rose have struggled in attack, Warburton has suggested their tactics without the ball make them a better side than when they have it.

"This game should suit England. Scotland have been quite a high-possession team over the past few games and Ireland were very comfortable being without the ball in their thumping victory at Murrayfield in the last round," Warburton wrote in The Times.

"And I do think that England still actually look better without the ball as well. I do find that in England’s attack, when they run out of ideas, their default option is just to stab a kick in behind the opposition and so often those kicks do not seem particularly purposeful.

"Of course I understand that if it’s a deliberate kick in behind a wing to create a high-pressure five-metre lineout for the opposition, from where you can maybe force a poor kick out just by the 22, then that is a good plan. But too often it does not look like that with England.

"Sometimes you are watching them and they are actually going forward in attack and they put those kicks in and you find yourself thinking, ‘Why?’ You are better off building the phases and looking for the three-point penalty by just holding the ball."
