Because of this, keen gardeners will want to keep their plants as pest-free as possible. And instead of spraying with pesticides, which can be harmful and full of chemicals, there's a much more natural solution to try. Influencer and mum Chantel Mila on TikTok says you can banish spiders and flies from your indoor and outdoor plants by adding one simple ingredient to the soil.

In a recent video, she explained exactly how to keep your home insect-free this summer, and it's so easy to do. If it's your plants that are causing concern, all you need to do is pop some leftover coffee grounds into the soil.

According to Chantel, pests hate the smell of this popular morning beverage.

And because the soil is where pests are likely to cause the most damage, placing the coffee grounds in this area should help to deter them pretty effectively, leaving your plants looking perfect during the warmer months.

It's a great zero-waste hack too, as it gives a purpose to these leftover coffee grounds that you might have lying around at home.

They can also help to repel slugs, who are said to hate the gritty texture of coffee, and will stay away from plants and their surrounding areas if coffee is placed here.

However, coffee isn't just great for repelling pests. According to BBC Gardener's World, it can also serve as a brilliant natural fertiliser, keeping your plants healthy and thriving.

The experts said: "The grounds are relatively high in nitrogen and also contain potassium and phosphorus, as well as being a source of organic matter."

However, if you've got a dog who likes to eat everything, then it's worth being more careful.

Caffeine can be toxic to pooches, and although brewed coffee grounds do generally have a very low caffeine content, you shouldn't spread it on the soil. Instead, bury the grounds or add them to the compost pile.
