Antony burst into tears when discussing the tough times he endured on and off the pitch at Manchester United. The Brazilian was snapped up by former Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag and placed under immediate pressure due to his £82million price tag. But he struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League and found himself slipping down the Old Trafford pecking order.

The 25-year-old did not start a single league game over the first half of this season and fled to Real Betis on loan with only 135 minutes of league action under his belt. Despite his impressive showings for Dutch giants Ajax, Antony was a shadow of his former self at United and often targeted by unhappy supporters.

"I didn't feel that desire to play football," he told TNT Sports Brasil. "I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. I went through difficult times when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore.

"They were very hard days for me. Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room.

"So, for me it was very complicated, but thank God, with the help of my family and mainly with the help of God, I managed to get ahead and today I am very happy here."

Antony has scored nine goals and set up five more since signing for Betis, playing an instrumental role in their run to the UEFA Conference League final. In a huge boost to United, who are looking to cash in this summer, the winger's form has brought other suitors to the table.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus have both been linked, raising the possibility of a bidding war with Betis, who are naturally eager to secure the services of their danger man on a permanent basis.

In February, Betis chief Ramon Alcaron said: "The other day the CEO of United called me. We sent them details of the player throughout the week so they can see we’re looking after their asset. We have very good chemistry with United and the player, who is happy here. It is a possibility that he will continue next season, why not?"
