21 best pictures as Everton say goodbye to Goodison Park with Southampton win | Football | Sport

It was a fitting farewell to Goodison Park. Having been based at the famous ground since 1892, Everton brought the curtain down on 133 years at the stadium with a 2-0 win over Southampton in front of 39,201 passionate fans.

But the emotional scenes began long before Iliman Ndiaye put the home side into a sixth-minute lead, the forward doubling the lead before the break. From the early hours of the morning, with the roads closed, fans piled onto the streets to produce a carnival of noise and colour. The team bus was barely visible amid a sea of blue smoke, and long before kick-off, the atmosphere inside the ground was electric.

Many without tickets stayed outside the ground for the duration, keen to play their part on a historic day. From newborn babies to lifelong elderly fans, supporters of all generations were represented on what proved to be the perfect send-off.
