It’s often that pigeons take reign of your garden and become a bit of a nuisance. Whether it's their large groups with flapping wings, the food they take from your garden or even the nesting areas, it's understandable that you may want to keep them away from your outdoor space.

There are many methods out there for deterring the birds from your garden; however, this quick trick heightens your chances. No harsh chemicals or strenuous tasks are needed if you’re looking to bid farewell to pigeons, just certain colours. Interestingly, pigeons are afraid of a particular colour that could make your life a little bit easier. Metallic colours like silver colours are particularly good at scaring them away due to their shininess. For example, metal outside often causes light to reflect from the surface which not only scares the birds but also confuses them and creates concern. Avian expert and founder of Birdzy Inc. Isabelle Manseau said: “Pigeons are deterred by certain colours they perceive as threatening or unsettling..." 

“Such as reflective or metallic shades like silver or chrome and intense hues like red or orange.” By adding more of these to your garden, you’re more likely to send them on their way.

There are many ways you can seamlessly incorporate these avoidant colours into your garden with good taste. Whatever the style is of your space, you simply want to elevate it, rather than having these colours detract from it entirely.

Consider adding decorative items that have a metallic finish, such as reflective sculptures, metal wind chimes, metal roofing and watering cans. When it comes to bright reds and oranges, you can do as little or as much as you like. 

From planting the bright flowers by a birdbath or feeder to painting your garden furniture or fencing a bright red or orange, not only are you deterring the pigeons, but you are also adding a unique flair to your outdoor space.

It’s worth noting that pigeons are also not the biggest fans of blaring shades of white. This may be even easier to incorporate into your garden, Isabella suggests.

By adding white decorative pebbles and stones to your garden, painting furniture white or placing white plant pots near feeding areas, you’re creating an unsettling environment for the unwanted birds to rest.

They even suggest planting white flowers by your bird feeders, such as white hydrangeas or daisies. If you’re choosing to paint things white, ensure the product is non-toxic, or if you want to save yourself the job, you can buy already white ornaments.
