The Prince and Princess of Wales will join King Charles and the rest of the royals at a poignant service later in May to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day this year.

Princess Kate, who has been making a gradual return to royal duties since her cancer battle last year, will attend a special Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey to honour our war heroes, according to the Mirror.

Other members of the Royal Family to join the commemorations at the Cenotaph in London on May 8 will include Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

According to the outlet, sources said the King, who was also diagnosed with cancer last year, is "determined to pay tribute to our war heroes".

The Government will be reportedly releasing further details in due course.

Elsewhere, royal sources said that the monarch will likely pay a "personal tribute" to World War 2 heroes and other military personnel who have lost their lives in battle.

This year, pipers will count down to the anniversary of VE Day with 80 days of piping.

The pipe marathon will see 20 pipers taking it in turns to play at different locations around the country on each of the 80 days leading up to the anniversary.

It will culminate with a performance of Celebratum, which was specially written for the commemoration, by Pipe Major Lady Jane Macrae in St Paul's Cathedral in London on May 7.

The performance will be part of a service to bless the lamp to be used to light the first of more than 1,000 beacons. These, are going to be lit around the country to commemorate the end of WW2 in Europe.

A Pipe Major urged people to "stop for a few minutes and reflect" on the human cost of war.

Lady Jane will also be one of two players leading off the event at noon on Tuesday, with a performance at Crathes Castle in Aberdeenshire.

At the same time, Stuart Liddell, who wrote Celebratum, will be performing at the war memorial at Inveraray in Argyll and Bute.

Lady Jane will also light the first beacon opposite the London Eye on May 8, exactly 80 years since the Allies accepted Nazi Germany's surrender in WW2.

Lady Jane said the difference between the music Mr Liddell wrote for last year's D-Day commemoration - called Audax - and Celebratum reflects the difference between the two events.
