17 best Newcastle parade pictures as Ant & Dec and 150k fans toast cup win | Football | Sport

Newcastle United fans made the most of their chance to celebrate as wildly as possible today with their Carabao Cup heroes after ending 70 years of hurt with their first domestic trophy since 1955. The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley on March 16 thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak, which were enough to down Arne Slot's men.

It was a triumph for the entire city as more than 150,000 fans flocked to the streets to savour a memorable day on Tyneside. Eddie Howe, who became the first English manager to lift a major trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008, held the silverware aloft alongside his Newcastle players, with Isak, Burn, Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes some of the other passionate celebrators amongst the squad.

The open-top bus parade began at around 4pm, starting at their glorious home stadium, St James’ Park, before making its way down Gallowgate.

A huge banner showing Howe celebrating draped from the roof of the Sandman Signature building, underlining how the 45-year-old has become an instant icon in the city.

Newcastle fans climbed high onto traffic lights and public landmarks dotted around the city to catch the best view of the open-top bus. Some young fans brought along pyrotechnics which let off grey plumes of smoke, but there were no safety concerns as the bus continued on its journey through the streets.

It then turned onto Percy Street before heading onto the B1318 towards Gosforth. The bus stopped at the Town Moor as fans lapped up watching their heroes arrive. The bus arrived at the Town Moor, allowing the players to get off and take to the big stage where they joined together and held the trophy aloft.

There, they met national TV favourites Anthony McPartlane and Declan Connolly - known as 'Ant and Dec' - where they discussed their memories from the final as fans watched on the giant television screen.

Manager Howe said: "We hope it is just the beginning. We wanted to try and bring success, happiness to everybody here, but the scenes today have just taken our breath away. A big thank you to everyone that's come and supported us.

"The loyalty, passion, devotion that you show us, and we really appreciate it. Thank you."
