Erik ten Hag may quit football forever after Man Utd disaster | Football | Sport

Erik ten Hag has suggested that he may never return to football management after his turbulent spell in charge of Manchester United.

The former Ajax boss was appointed to replace Ralf Rangnick in 2022 but was unable to bring the Red Devils back into Premier League title contention.

He won two domestic trophies, with United lifting the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup a year later. However, their dismal league form led to his dismissal in October with the club languishing in the bottom half.

Ten Hag was replaced by Ruben Amorim a month later but the Portuguese coach has struggled to turn the tide, with United even lower down the table in 15th place.

Their former manager is currently enjoying some time away from the limelight but is keeping his options open regarding his next move, even if that means leaving football altogether.

"I don't know how my career will develop, but I'm going to try my best provided something comes along that suits me," said Ten Hag in an interview with SEG Stories.

"There are so many other things I could do. Maybe in football, in a new position as a manager, that’s an option. And maybe something completely different.

"I’ve been working with my brothers lately. We have our own company. Or rather, they have their own company, but we also run a company together with our father. That’s also something I love to do. I can now give that more attention and it’s also a lot of fun."

Ten Hag's father, Hennie, owns a successful real estate company while his brothers, Michel and Rico, run a number of finance firms.

Only time will tell if he decides to join one of the family businesses or if the lure of the dugout will prove too strong in future.

He was linked with the Borussia Dortmund job after Nuri Sahin was relieved of his duties last month, but the German giants opted to appoint Niko Kavic instead.

A potential return to Ajax has also been mooted but Francesco Farioli's job looks to be safe for the foreseeable future, having led them to the top of the Eredivisie.

Ten Hag has already confirmed that he will not consider returning to football until at least the end of the season, at which point he could find himself in high demand.

However, it remains to be seen if he will turn his back on the sport he loves in order to forge a completely new career somewhere else.
