The UK is a nation of gardeners, with green-fingered experts found maintaining their grass, bushes and flowers across the country.

Although, mistakes can still very easily be made, and gardeners have been warned not to do three things in February.

gardeningandforaginguk has released a helpful TikTok, giving viewers a low down of what they should leave be at this time of year, despite temptation.

John, whose account provides followers with "facts and tips about gardening and foraging", wrote: "As hard as it is when it's still cold and the garden can start to look and feel untidy, don't be tempted to go out and tidy up or prune some of these bushes."

It added: "Some plants rely on the old wood to protect them from the frosts and can be great hiding places for insects like ladybirds."

In the video, the clip's creator says: "Gardening jobs - don't be doing these in February!

"As hard as it is, and you look out the window and you think, 'I'm gonna tidy up the garden', don't do it! You could do more harm than good."

He added: "These lovely hydrangears, them buds are great hiding places for insects and protect the bush. It's the same for a fuscia.

"All of them twigs there, they actually protect the base of the shrub from the winter frost, too."

Moving onto what to do with larger plants, John said: "Cherry tress: do not be pruning them!

"It also goes for your plum tree, as well. This harms them more than good.

"Wait until the summer. It protects them from silver leaf."

The camera then pans down to fragrant plant down below, which should be left alond until later in the year, John suggests.

The expert added: "And, last but not least, these lavenders weren't cut at the end of the summer.

"Now is not the time to be tidying them up. Wait until it warms up, and then we'll just take them down as low as we can, where there's still green shoots showing."
