Man Utd star Andre Onana offers angry response to Nemanja Matic dig as feud erupts | Football | Sport

Andre Onana has hit back at Nemanja Matic after being called 'one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history'. The pair have now traded stern words ahead of the Europa League quarter-final first leg between the Red Devils and Lyon on Thursday night.

It was Onana's preview of that game which sparked the feud to begin with. Speaking in a press conference ahead of the trip to France, the Cameroonian stopper said: "Of course it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them." Now that a day has passed to let the dust settle, it is clear that the comment did not go down well in the Lyon camp.

Matic, who made nearly 200 appearances in five years at United and joined Lyon last January, stung Onana with a savage dig when asked about his remarks. "If you're one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history then you need to take care of what you are talking about," said the Serb.

"If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that I would question myself but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's modern history, he needs to show that before he says it."

Hours later, Onana landed a retaliatory shot of his own by pointing out that Matic did not win a single trophy during his time at Old Trafford. He wrote on X: "I would never be disrespectful to another club.

"We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same."

Onana has Matic trumped in that department, having helped United to an FA Cup win last season, which featured a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final at Wembley.

The Red Devils are hoping to salvage part of this miserable campaign by going all the way in the Europa League. The competition has mostly been a safe haven for new manager Ruben Amorim, and Real Sociedad were soundly beaten 5-2 on aggregate in the last 16.

United are struggling in the Premier League, but Lyon are not faring much better in France. With wins in only half of their 28 Ligue 1 games, they currently sit fifth in the table behind Liam Rosenior's young Strasbourg side.
