UK gardeners urged to do 3 things in February to grow better roses

There are three jobs that gardeners should complete in February to get great roses later this year.

TikTok gardening expert Michael, known as the Mediterranean Gardener, revealed to his 271,300 followers how to get the prettiest blooms for Spring by getting prepared now.

The first step - and possibly the hardest to master - is pruning back the rose bush so that quality flowers can blossom, instead of leaving room for smaller shoots that may not produce as much.

Any deadwood should be cut back to the base which is generally brown or black, and any branches that cross through the centre should be cut too, because they can rub together or cause damage.

Growth thinner than a pencil should also be culled because the flowers are likely to be weak or small, and the larger canes should be trimmed to about a third of their size, cut just above an outward-facing bud on a 45-degree angle.

After the pruning ordeal is over, the next two steps are about feeding the roses because they are "big eaters", according to Michael, and he recommends using a fertiliser to get the best out of them.

The next step is using a mulch, which is usually a thick layer of organic manure, compost or bark, to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds add nutrients and insulate plant roots.

The gardening expert encouraged people to take the steps now to ensure the roses blossom in spring.

The Mediterranean Gardener has gained over three million likes on his TikTok channel thanks to his gardening tips and tutorials.
