Get rid of mould for good with one everyday essential oil

Mould is a persistent problem in many UK bathrooms, leading to unsighly spots and unpleasant odours.

Most prevelant in high-moisture areas like the seals around your shower or bath, mould can be difficult to get rid of and it can be equally as hard to keep it gone.

While some chemical cleaners promise instant results, a natural alternative can be just as effective and eminently better for your health.

Brian Toward, home improvement expert and CEO of bathroom retailer Wholesale Domestic, has highlighted one every day essential oil as being a powerful, eco-friendly way to tackle mould.

Known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil destroys the cell wall of mould spores that helps to prevent it from returning.

"Bathrooms are naturally humid spaces, making them a breeding ground for mould," explained Toward. "Sealant around baths and showers is particularly vulnerable due to constant exposure to water and soap residue."

Toward said: "Over time, even high-quality sealant can develop cracks, allowing moisture to seep in and create the perfect conditions for mould to thrive."

He added that mould isn’t just an eyesore, it can also release allergens into the air, triggering respiratory issues, allergies and asthma attacks if left untreated.

Brian recommends mixing a teaspoon of tea tree oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle. He said: "Shake well, spray onto the mould, and leave it to dry naturally. Tea tree oil not only kills mould but also prevents regrowth due to its antifungal properties."

While removing mould is crucial, preventing its return is just as much of a challenge. Toward advises improving bathroom ventilation by using an extractor fan or opening a window during and after showers.

"Wipe down tiles and sealant with a dry cloth after bathing to remove excess moisture," he suggested. "You can also invest in a mould-resistant sealant, which is specifically designed to withstand damp conditions."

For those seeking a natural and cost-effective solution, tea tree oil offers a simple yet powerful way to keep bathrooms mould-free while avoiding harsh chemicals.
