Interior designer shares things you shouldn’t add to home

If you’re looking to renovate and do some work on your home in the new year, one interior designer has revealed her dos and don’ts about what you should think about.

Saying she helps build and design dream homes for a living, spending more than £1 million on home decor yearly for her clients, Bee shared her wisdom to help any prospecting home DIYers save money.

She started the post by revealing the truth about getting cheap “screwless” socket faceplates, saying: “[They] look nice for the first two days and then they’re going to pop off and fall on the floor once a week for the rest of your life because your walls aren’t straight and they’re poor quality.”

The next thing she mentioned was bathroom renovation, and the importance of getting it waterproofed properly before installing the new appliances, as it will help prevent any leaks.

In terms of furnishing your home, Bee said to avoid velvet sofas at all costs, as they won’t age well. “The fabric flattens out and goes shiny, it’s no longer soft and it looks old beyond its years,” she said.

As for things you can save money on, Bee said the only time she buys things from the cheapest supplier is when she’s looking for aluminium ‘crittal style’ doors.

“You’re already buying a look-alike product - real crittall doors are steel and triple the cost. What are you overpaying for?” she said.

If you’re looking to get new cabinets or wardrobes fitted, Bee suggests not going for the floor to ceiling ones, claiming they’re more impractical than they might seem, unless you add a matching integrated step ladder in order to be able to reach the top shelves that would otherwise go useless.

While most viewers were thankful for Bee’s insights, some took to the comments to explain their own thoughts.

One person said:” Am I the only one who wants floor to ceiling cupboards purely to avoid the dusting?”

“Ran to the comments to explain the top shelf wardrobe. The are ESSENTIAL if you have a family. Not just for suitcases but Christmas decor, old kid clothes, ski gear, big straw hats, the list goes on,” another user said.

“Had screwless socket and switch plates for 5 years now - yet to have even one pop off?!?” another user said, to which Bee replied: “Maybe your walls are straight & they weren’t cheap.”
