White vinegar can tackle many cleaning dilemmas, from dissolving limescale and mould to whitening laundry and softening certain items like towels.

Vinegar is naturally anti-bacterial and acidic meaning it will remove sweat, oils, other stains and also residue from shower gels and shampoo

Typically this kitchen staple can be used on its own, but often it is recommended to combine it without other ingredients.

These ingredients include baking soda, washing up liquid essential oils or soda crystals.

When softening hard towels, cleaning enthusiast @anna_louisa_at_home uses soda crystals with white vinegar.

Anna captioned her video on TikTok: “How to get the fluffiest towels. I’ve always struggled with my towels as we live in a hard water area.

“I have learnt that using soda crystals and white vinegar is a great way to combat limescale and residue on your towels and restore your towel’s softness. Game-changer!”

In the video, Anna started by adding her hard towels to her bathtub filled with water, poured in some soda crystals and left it to sit for a few minutes.

She then transferred the towels to the washing machine, added her usual detergent to the drum and poured white vinegar ad soda crystals into the drawer compartment.

For those looking to “whiten” towels to a “brighter” shade, she suggested households can also add in oxi powder (a laundry bleach for whites).

Even the cleaning pros at Big Green Smile recommend this towel-washing tip. They said: “If your towels are feeling a bit crunchy, it may be that they’re suffering from lime scale and detergent build-up.

“Try soaking them in a medium-strength mixture of soda crystals and warm water. Rinse well, then wash them as normal, with half a cup of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer.”

Once your towels are washed, shake them to help separate the fibres. If the weather allows, line-dry your towels outside in the fresh air.

If you’re drying your towels indoors, ensure they are laid flat over a drying rack or hung out flat. This increases the surface area for drying, allowing them to dry quickly.
