UK households urged to keep curtains open this Christmas

As Christmas draws closer, heating bills are beginning to climb and thousands of homes across the UK look for ways to warm up and save money.

One of the top tips from the experts may seem counterintuitive but can actually help you in the long run - keeping your curtains open.

Indoor living experts VonHaus recommend harnessing the natural warmth that the UK gets from the sun - even in the winter.

They recommend opening your curtains and blinds during the day to let in as much sunlight as possible, and then close them at night to keep the heat inside.

Heavy curtains provide additional insulation, helping to trap warmth. While this may seem like a small step, it can make a noticeable difference in keeping your home warmer without touching the thermostat.

One of the simplest ways to retain heat in your home is by keeping doors closed to prevent warmth from escaping into unused areas.

This works especially well for larger homes or homes with open-plan designs. Additionally, closing doors behind you helps to create a ‘pocket’ of warmth in the room you are in, reducing the need for constant heating adjustments.

Another option is to embrace the Danish concept of "hygge" which is all about creating a cosy atmosphere. This can be achieved by layering up in jumpers and fluffy socks and slippers and you can take it one step further by making sure your space is full of thick rugs and blankets perfect for keeping warm.

It not only saves energy but adds to that festive Christmas charm.

If you’re hosting Christmas this year and cooking up a storm in the kitchen then you can kill two birds with one stone by using the heat from the oven to warm your home.

Cooking for large groups naturally warms up the home, so take this opportunity to lower the thermostat.

To save even more energy, opt for energy-efficient appliances like slow cookers or air fryers.
