Andy Murray to skip first Novak Djokovic tournament after linking up with Serb | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic is set to start his 2025 season at the Brisbane International but new coach Andy Murray won't be at his side Down Under, it is understood.

The intriguing partnership of the former tennis rivals has captured the headlines with Murray set to guide Djokovic through his pre-season preparation before providing tips and support at the Australian Open.

After a rare season devoid of Grand Slam glory - his first since 2017 - Djokovic will land in Australia early in readiness for the year's inaugural major which starts on January 12.

Brisbane witnesses his return to action on December 29 for the first time in 16 years.

"I’m excited to be kicking off my Australian swing at the Brisbane International and to compete again at Pat Rafter Arena," Djokovic said.

"I am looking forward to experiencing the incredible support from the Australian fans and making this tournament one to remember."

While Murray triumphed in Brisbane in 2012 and 2013, insiders at the PA news agency indicate he is unlikely to travel alongside Djokovic for this leg of the schedule.

Currently ranked seventh in the world, Djokovic’s focus is fixed on capturing an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam at Melbourne Park.

Explaining the decision to link up with Murray, the Serb said: "I wanted to take my time to find out whether I needed a new coach or not. The decision was yes, but it had to be a tennis legend.

"Since I was very young, I have played against him… and there are not many people who have won multiple Grand Slam titles.

"Andy has known me since I was very young, from the age of 12 or 13.

"He knows my game and everything that I have been through very well. He knows the things that are wrong with my game, all of my mistakes."
