Boiler expert shares the 'perfect temperature' your home should be to avoid frozen pipes

Gordon Wallis, a boiler expert from Your NRG, has shared advice on how to protect your home from frozen pipes and avoid costly repairs this winter.

The expert said: “Frozen pipes are one of the most common and expensive issues homeowners face during winter.

“When water freezes inside pipes it expands, putting massive pressure on the pipework.

“This often leads to cracks or bursts, resulting in water damage that can cost thousands to repair.”

According to the expert, turning the heating off completely when you’re not at home could be a costly mistake.

Even when your property is empty, it’s super important to keep the thermostat set to at least 10C.

This keeps the pipes warm enough to prevent freezing in the winter months, according to Gordon.

For optimal comfort and efficiency when you’re at home, the expert suggested keeping the heating between 18C and 20C.

He added: “This is the perfect temperature range to keep your boiler running nicely while also protecting your pipework.”

If possible, investing in a smart thermostat can help to maintain these temperatures without wasting energy.

Gordon noted: “Smart thermostats allow you to set schedules that match your daily routine, so your heating is only on when you need it.

“This can save energy while still providing the protection your pipes need.”

If you’re planning to go away for the festive season or a winter holiday, it’s super important to prepare your home for the colder months.

Households can do this by making sure the thermostat is set to a minimum of 10C, as well as insulating exposed pipes in unheated areas.

He explained: “Pipe lagging, foam pipe wrap or insulation sleeves, is a cheap and simple solution that can make a big difference in preventing frozen pipes.”

To further minimise risks, it was advised to turn off your mains water supply and relieve pressure in the pipes.
