How to remove moss from patios fast and for good without vinegar or bleach

Moss can be a real eyesore on patios and paving, thriving in just the right conditions. It loves to settle in shady spots, humid conditions, damp areas, and especially during extended spells of wet weather.

Over time, airborne particles like dust and dirt mix with the sand in the joints, creating an ideal environment for moss to flourish.

To tackle this green invader, it’s best to act swiftly and remove it before it gets out of hand.

In a bid to spruce up their garden, one green-fingered individual sought advice from the Gardening UK Facebook group. Kate Jones posted pictures of her patio besieged by moss and weeds, asking: "What’s the best way to revive this block paving?”

She explained the situation further: “We have it around the edge and at the bottom of our garden and it’s been neglected since we moved in (a lot of work to do in and out of the garden).”

Kate added: “There are loads of moss and weeds and a few hefty ant colonies. There’s a path down one side of the garden (north-facing side) then this nice bit at the bottom (which faces west).”

Jones expressed her desire to clean up the area for use as an evening/afternoon seating spot but was unsure how to proceed.

While some enthusiasts recommended using a pressure washer, caution was advised due to potential damage to the paving.

Others proposed a less aggressive approach, suggesting the use of washing powder to lift moss and weeds from patios without the need for intense scrubbing.

Emma Summers advised: “Washing powder. You would be amazed at the transformation. You can sweep new sand back into the seams afterwards.”

Lee Ahrens recommended a unique approach, stating: “Honestly sounds strange, but cover it in cheap washing machine powder and brush it around. It kills moss and everything fast and for good, then the rain will rinse it off.”

Brendan Teach offered his two cents: “Biological washing powder works well. Sprinkle it on and either let it rain or spray some water on.”

Susan Waters shared her cleaning tip: “Washing powder and water, leave for a couple of hours and rinse with the hose, brings it up great.”

Niki O'Neil revealed her go-to method: “I use Aldi biological washing powder to kill moss and algae. Works a dream.”
