Popular Sky TV feature will be blocked on devices, is yours on the list?

Sky is making a change to its service and it could mean some face being blocked from one of the firm's most popular features. The Sky Go app, which launched all the way back in 2012, lets users watch live channels and on-demand content via mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

It also lets customers set recordings when away from home, offers downloads which can then be watched when away from Wi-Fi and it can be used as a virtual remote - that's a handy bonus when the physical channel changer slips behind the sofa.

Sky Go is a much-loved app but if you happen to own a much older iPhone or iPad that can't update to the latest iOS software, Sky Go will stop working next month.

Sky says Apple devices will need to be running iOS 13 or later to continue getting access to Sky Go.

"For Sky Go on iOS, we’re removing support for iOS 12 by 17 September. We’ve updated the app and sky.com pages to reflect the change," Sky confirmed.

"To ensure we provide the best possible experience to Sky Go customers, from time to time, we stop supporting older operating system versions. Users who are on this iOS version won’t be able to use the Sky Go app after this date. They’ll need to update to iOS 13+ to continue using the app. This impacts iOS users only, not other Sky Go platforms."

If you have an iPhone or iPad you can check if your system software is up to date by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

Sadly, some much older devices - such as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 - can't switch to iOS 13 as they are no longer compatible with the latest operating system.

To make sure you don't lose access, check your Apple devices and make sure they are running iOS 13 or later.

This news comes as Sky has also confirmed that it will cancel the subscriptions of some of its customers in October as the TV firm continues to restrict channel access for those still using some of its oldest Standard Definition (SD) TV equipment.

“If you don't contact us or upgrade, your Sky TV will be cancelled and you'll lose access to these services on your payment due date in October,” Sky said on a help page on its website.

The firm is now urging those with old set-top boxes to apply for a free upgrade.
