Alisson reacts to Liverpool closing in on £30m Giorgi Mamardashvili | Football | Sport

Alisson has played down suggestions he will leave Liverpool next summer despite the imminent signing of Giorgi Marmardashvili at Anfield. The Georgian goalkeeper is set to become Arne Slot’s first addition at the club.

Marmardashvili shone at Euro 2024 and is set to cost around £30million. A sell-on clause has also been agreed as part of the deal. He will remain on loan at Valencia in La Liga for the current campaign after the plan for a temporary 12-month move to Bournemouth collapsed.

Brazil’s Alisson has been the No.1 on Merseyside since joining in the summer of 2018 for up to £67m. The 31-year-old has certified himself as one of the best keepers in the world in his six seasons with the club.

But Liverpool have decided to future-proof themselves with the signing of Mamardashvili, 23, in the knowledge their current first-choice is not getting any younger.

Asked what he thinks of the signing, Alisson - who is under contract until 2026 with Liverpool having the option to extend his deal by an extra 12 months - admitted he had prior knowledge of the Reds’ chase of the shot-stopper.

Yet following claims the South American will depart next summer to make way for Marmardashvili, he said: “I think the club needs to prepare for the future. We are not all going to last forever and I’m getting old!

“No, for a goalkeeper I am still young. I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club. But they have to prepare for the future.

“I knew about that (signing Mamardashvili) before it came out on social media and that’s a good message for me because it means the club cares about what I think.”

Alisson had previously only played under Jurgen Klopp before this season. Arne Slot replaced the iconic German, who brought the keeper to Liverpool six years ago, in the summer.

And life under the Dutchman, Alisson says, is not too different. “I know my main role is still keeping clean sheets and making saves,” said the second-most expensive keeper ever.

“My first contact [with Slot] was good. That is really important. It does not define our relationship for this year or the coming years, but it was really important to see how clear he is in his ideas and see how cool he is as a person.

“He is a really nice person, a family guy and a family man with a lot of conviction in his ideas of what he wants from the players and what he wants to achieve. His goals are for greatness and for great things for the club - the same as mine.

“So it was a really good conversation. I think it was the right choice. He is bringing new energy. The way he thinks about football is pretty similar to what we had before.

“This is a new beginning, a new era. We are really happy with the way things are going and we hope that we can bring results and bring trophies for the club.”
