Tesco shares important message to those buying herbs

When it comes to doing the food shop have you noticed how much prices have gone up by? Whether you're the kind of person who prefers to go in-store or do it online, we have all been affected by food inflation in the UK.

As prices go up in supermarkets, Brits are looking for new ways to reduce our food waste.

The UK wastes approximately 9.52 million metric tonnes of food every year, which could feed more than 30 million people annually. This is according to data from Latestdeals.co.uk.

So, do you tend to throw good food away even though it is past its 'best before' date?

Well, don't worry as Tesco has shared a handy piece of advice for those who buy herbs from the supermarket.

You will probably notice fresh herbs don't always stay so fresh after a couple of days. Especially when you don't always have enough time to use them up before they start to go a bit limp and lifeless.

However, Tesco's website advised: "Don’t let a big bunch of herbs wilt and go to waste."

The supermarket giant recommended using the freezer to help extend the shelf life of the product.

They continued: "Roughly chop soft herbs like basil, coriander and parsley, place in ice cube trays and top up with water, then simply defrost on a plate when ready to use, or drop whole into pasta and curries.

"If you’ve got lots, simply place whole bunches in freezer bags and chop when needed – no need to defrost!"

Even better you can also use the frozen herbs for dishes such as soups, stews or roasted potatoes as we head in autumn.
