One of the best British films of all time is now streaming on Disney+ | Films | Entertainment

Back in 1981, Ben Cross and Ian Charleson starred as Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire.

The iconic film follows the true story of these two British athletes, an English Jew overcoming prejudice and a devout Christian running for God’s glory.

The pair competed in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, with Liddell famously refusing to run in the 100m heats because they were on a Sunday. Yet he competes in the 400m instead and would go on to win the gold.

The film’s title is inspired by the line “Bring me my Chariot of fire” from the English hymn Jerusalem.

Considered one of the greatest British films of all time, Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Oscars, winning four including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score for Vangelis’ famous electronic theme tune.

The movie also features Nigel Havers, Sir Ian Holm, Sir John Gielgud and Richard Griffiths.

Both Sir Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry had uncredited roles as an extra and Gilbert and Sullivan Club singer respectively.

Chariots of Fire is streaming now in HD on Disney+.
