Greece Authorities have issued a new alert this afternoon expressing concerns about the potential for a wave of wildfires tomorrow.

A new warning has been issued by  Greece's Civil Protection of a very high fire risk (category 4) for Saturday, August 17.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has instructed state and local services in six key areas to remain on high alert to respond quickly to any potential fires, including conducting both aerial and ground patrols.

A precautionary ban will also be in place, restricting the movement of vehicles and people in national parks, forests, and other high-risk areas.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities outdoors that could accidentally start a fire, such as burning vegetation, using machinery that produces sparks, lighting barbecues, or discarding lit cigarettes. 

According to the warning at very high risk are the following regions: Attica, Sterea Ellada (Viotia, Evia including the island of Skyros), Southern Aegean (Cyclades islands), Northern Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria), Peloponnese (Corinth, Argolida) and Crete.

They also reminded the public to contact the fire brigade by dialing the emergency number 199 if they spot a fire.

In Spain, a severe drought has affected parts of the country for several weeks, leading to water restrictions in various regions, including Catalonia.
