Tech experts have warned Brits to move their Wi-Fi routers this week to prevent them from getting damaged during the heatwave sweeping over much of the UK. The country will experience scorching temperatures over the coming days, with many areas exceeding 30C. In fact, parts of the country have been given a rare amber health alert as temperatures go far above the average for Britain. As well as staying cool and hydrated, Brits should be cautious of their tech and appliances during a heatwave.
According to experts, Wi-Fi connections can be seriously affected during a heatwave. Routers can overheat, causing disruptions and even permanent damage to the devices. However, there are ways to prevent this from happening when the UK is hit with a prolonged period of hot weather. One expert has listed the pieces of tech in your home that are in danger during a heatwave, including your Wi-Fi router.
Juliet Moran from TelephoneSystems.Cloud said: "Electronic devices are always letting off some type of heat when in use but in the summer it’s important to be extra mindful of this.
"Most people are aware they should keep things like their phones out of the sun, but you should also be mindful of where you place your Wi-Fi router.
This can also overheat and affect the router's performance if it’s in direct sunlight or tucked away in or behind a cupboard or the TV."
She advised UK households to move their routers away from windows and sunny spots in their homes. Placing them in direct sunlight can cause them to overheat, especially during heatwaves.
Additionally, you should avoid placing your router in an enclosed space that is likely to trap heat, as this can also lead to it overheating. You should place it in a more open area that has proper air flow.
You should also make sure to keep the area clear of dust, because this can cause issues with the device's air flow. As well as Wi-Fi routers, UK households should be wary of laptops during a heatwave.
To prevent these devices from overheating, they should be charged only on hard surfaces. This means avoiding leaving them on a bed or a sofa when charging. The same goes for smartphones and other devices such as tablets.
