A major high street retailer has begun a massive closing down sales at six of its UK locations, with some products discounted by up to 20% off a range of products, including video games, consoles, accessories, and LEGO sets. The move comes as GAME, the video game retailer, prepares to permanently shut a number of stores between August and September 2025. GAME currently operates around 240 branches across the UK, and has been owned by Frasers Group since it was acquired for £52 million back in June 2019.

Shoppers in affected locations have already spotted clearance signs, with more promotions expected as the closing dates approach. Six GAME stores are closing between August and September 2025, including one that closed yesterday, August 10, in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

The next to go is the Southend, Essex branch, which is expected to close before the end of August.

This will be followed by the Metrocentre store in Gateshead, scheduled to close on September 7, and the Galleries Shopping Centre location in Bristol, set to shut on September 25.

Two more outlets, one in Chatham, Kent, and another in Eldon Square, Newcastle are also slated to close before the end of September, though their exact dates have yet to be confirmed.

These closures follow recent shutdowns of other GAME outlets, including Manchester’s Trafford Centre in June and Nottingham’s Victoria Centre last month.

GAME was founded 33 years ago by Terry Norris and Bev Ripley under the name The Rhino Group. In 1999, it was acquired by Electronics Boutique, which rebranded it as The Game Group.

The company expanded further in 2007 with the acquisition of Gamestation. After going into administration in 2012, it was then bought by OpCapita and renamed Game Retail Ltd.

In 2019, it became part of Frasers Group.

In recent years, GAME has undergone several rounds of restructuring. Back in 2020, the retailer revealed plans to close up to 40 stores, citing the need to streamline operations.
