One cook has revealed the secret ingredient to great-tasting lasagne, and it's quite an unusual addition. Lasagne is an incredibly popular dish for Brits to make at home, down to it being delicious and relatively easy to cook. Many people simply make it with pre-made sauces, or by mixing a few standard ingredients together. But there is one ingredient you should consider adding to your lasagne to make it taste even better.
One online cook shared her clever hack, with some responding to say that they do the exact same thing to make their lasagne burst with flavour. When one Quora user asked for the unusual ingredients that other people add to their recipes, one person said that she includes chocolate in it to make it taste "pretty amazing". Kat Smithy described how she discovered the hack and how it enhances the flavour of her homemade lasagne immensely.
She revealed that she was staying at an Airbnb in France when she decided to make a lasagne.
During the cooking process, she tried to spice up a premade sauce that she thought tasted "bland". She found that red wine made it taste a bit bitter, and she didn't have any sugar to balance it out.
However, she remembered that she had some milk chocolate in her bag, so she decided to experiment with that. "I broke the bar up and dropped it in," she said. "It turned out pretty amazing. Like, really really delicious. No kidding."
Many chefs have shared recipes for chocolate in lasagne, particularly when it is made with a meat sauce. One chef, known online as FX Cuisine, shared their lasagne recipe and revealed their secret ingredient to be chocolate.
"The chocolate really does not show much in the final product, and not all of your guests will guess where that luscious, velvety shine comes from," they revealed.
"In any case, it's a delicious, highly authentic and really quick pasta sauce to make."
Although it is normally enjoyed as a sweet treat, chocolate is a great addition to many savoury dishes. One of them is chilli con carne, which often features a small bit of dark chocolate to balance out the acidity of the dish.
Another is Sue Quinn's pulled chicken tacos, which she says have a lovely "depth of flavour" thanks to the addition of dark chocolate.
