The Chairman of Otterton Parish Council, Ian Simpson, described the situation as "very, very serious", reports ITV.

He said: "I got a WhatsApp message mid-morning to say there had been a massive explosion."

He explained: "Obviously, everybody panicking, but luckily the owners weren't actually in the house at the time.

"But I came straight back to the village, very concerned about everyone here."
