Cabbage may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of delicious food, with its mushy texture and lacklustre flavour, but this recipe will change your view completely. There are plenty of ways to cook cabbage that can transform this rather unloved food into a mouthwatering dish.
One recipe, shared by Lisa Bryan at Downshiftology, sees this humble vegetable turned into a mouthwatering side dish in just 20 minutes. Lisa writes: "Cabbage has long been one of my favorite vegetables to cook with. It adds a delicious crunch to salads like coleslaw, becomes meltingly tender in cabbage soup, and caramelizes beautifully when it’s sautéed."
If you fancy turning this side dish into a delicious main, Lisa suggests adding cooked ground meat or shredded meat. You can also add some more vegetables, with grated carrots and sliced bell peppers, making great additions.
Lisa adds that sautéed cabbage can even form part of a breakfast when paired with bacon and eggs.
Explaining why she opts for ghee instead of butter or olive oil, Lisa reveals that cabbage can easily burn if sautéed with butter, while olive oil won't give it as sweet a flavour as ghee.
Start by adding the ghee to a skillet or Dutch oven over a medium-high heat. Then sauté the onions for a minute, until softened, then add the garlic.
Once the garlic is fragrant, add the cabbage and sauté for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until it becomes soft and caramelised.
Once cooked, sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss together before serving.
