Nothing beats mashed potatoes that are smooth and creamy, and while the dish is straightforward to make, many of us can end up with a serving that's made up of lumps. The majority of people typically add milk and tons of butter to try and achieve the perfect texture, and adding the two ingredients is enough for some. However, if you want to take your mashed potatoes to the next level, not only improve the creaminess, but also give the flavour a boost, then there's one ingredient that needs to be added to your recipe.

Yumna Jaward on her blog, Feel Good Foodie, shared the extra ingredient that homecooks should add to their mash for one that is creamier, has a tangy flavour, and is just all round "extra delicious".

She wrote: "Mashed potatoes are a classic, but sometimes classics need a little revamp. Enter Greek yoghurt mashed potatoes - my secret to making these potatoes not just creamy, but velvety and tangy. The Greek yoghurt introduces a richness and depth that takes a familiar comfort of mashed potatoes to a unique place. It's not just about an oh-so-smooth; it's also enhancing flavour here."

As well as making your mashed potatoes extra delicious, Greek yoghurt comes with health benefits from adding in extra protein to gut-healthy probiotics.

The food blogger also recommends "slightly" warming up your dairy before adding it to the mashed potatoes. She added: "This helps them integrate more smoothly and maintains the temperature of your mashed potatoes.

Making mashed potatoes with Greek yoghurt is is simple. As with any mashed potatoes recipe, you start off with adding potatoes to cold water and bring them to a boil. Yumna also adds garlic and salt to the pot of potatoes.

Next, drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander and then return the potatoes to the pot, adding in the Greek yoghurt, some butter and seasoning it with salt and pepper.

While the potatoes are still hot, use a fork, masher, or electric beater to mash the potatoes, gradually adding milk while you continue to mash. Keep doing so until you achieve your desired consistency.

Then finish it off with some more salt and pepper, seasoned to taste, before serving it warm topped with some butter and black pepper, as an option.
