A Cumbrian village with two Michelin-starred restaurants has been ranked as one of the UK's most picturesque for a mini break this summer, alongside other popular seaside spots. The quaint spot is joined by a North Wales resort inspired by the Italian Riviera, which also made the list of 25 villages that have "maintained their timeless charm whilst also adapting to modern times".

This  list, created by The Times, features villages of various sizes and characteristics, from a "hamlet to one with a rom-com-worthy collection of trendy shops." Spots such as Askwith in North Yorkshire; Ashford in the Water, the Peak District; Portmeirion and Abersoch, both in North Wales, make the list as well as Cumbria's charming Cartmel. Each location offers a distinctive experience, but, if you're after a gastronomic adventure, Cartmel takes the cake, boasting "two Michelin-starred restaurants, and a shop selling industrial quantities of its sticky toffee pudding as well as local cheeses."

The village is renowned for its sticky toffee pudding and Simon Rogan's restaurant L'Enclume, with The Times lauding its "serious good looks".

The three-star restaurant's "laid-back cousin", according to Michelin, Rogan and Co., sports its own star and "sits in the centre of the village and occupies a pretty cottage beside a stream, with dark wood beams and welcoming open fires," according to the culinary guide.

"Simon Rogan’s influence is clear to see on the menu, which lists skilfully prepared, understated dishes that make great use of creative ingredient and flavour combinations.

"The clean, uncomplicated approach keeps the focus firmly on each main ingredient, with exceptional produce coming from Simon's Our Farm development in the Cartmel Valley, or carefully sourced from trusted Lake District suppliers."

As if often the case with these lists, it was impossible not to make several pitstops across both the Peak and Lake Districts, with Cartmel sitting just outside of the latter.

Elsewhere across the UK, Abersoch was dubbed the "trendiest village" in Wales during the summer months, often referred to as "Cheshire-by-sea".

The captivating colourful village of Portmerion, modelled after Portofino in Italy, also made the cut. It was described as a place "unlike anywhere else in the UK", boasting "a melange of eccentric buildings in Pokemon colours, exuberant gardens and pale blue benches."

The publication suggests visiting Ashford for "peak village perfection", where one can find a "medieval Sheepwash bridge, a church dating back to the 12th century and a thriving cricket club that plays on the village green, along with a collection of very charming limestone cottages with meticulously maintained gardens."
