Amanda Anisimova disagreed with a fuming Aryna Sabalenka after the Wimbledon finalist was accused of celebrating a point too early in their final-four clash. The world No. 1 admitted that she was "p***ed off" after Anisimova let out a loud cheer before the ball had gone passed her and the point was officially over.
More fury was unleashed in the seventh game of the deciding set, when Anisimova got the benefit of the net cord and her shot dribbled over the line. Instead of lifting her racket up in apology, as is tradition among tennis players, she turned around and fist-pumped.
Speaking in her post-match press conference, Sabalenka admitted she was angry about the moment and explained: "Yeah, I was just trying to chase the ball. Yeah, she was already celebrating it. I was, like, I mean, that's a bit too early. Then she kind of p***ed me off saying that, oh, that's what she does all the time.
"I was grateful that she actually said that because I was, like, it's actually help me to keep fighting. I'm like, okay, now I'm going to show you the tennis. So I came back because I got really angry in that moment. So probably in the third set I should have, like, remembered, and you know, probably will help. It is what it is."
But Anisimova, who faces Iga Swiatek in the SW19 final on Saturday, played down the early-celebration incident. "No, I wasn't celebrating," she claimed. "It was just, like, a long grunt, I guess. I don't really know what the deal was there, to be honest, because I didn't feel like it was that interfering.

"But yeah, I tried to not do it again. Yeah, it was just such a high-stakes match. I think we were both grunting a lot out there. We have a big game, so that's the outcome of it. But yeah, I wasn't really sure what the issue was, but I can play it back. Maybe I was a bit interfering. I don't really know."
The pair did share a warm embrace after the net after Anisimova claimed a 6-4 4-6 6-4 victory and Sabalenka later conceded that the 12th seed was the better player on the day.
And Anisimova was proud of her efforts on the big stage, having a first Grand Slam final in her career.
"She's such a tough player," Anisimova admitted. "I knew that I had to really dig deep and make as few mistakes as possible. So yeah, it's really hard trying to have to play perfect tennis because that's the only way to really get the win, but I feel like we really fought out there today. The conditions weren't easy."
"I feel like I was playing very well in the first set. To be able to hold my serve every time was super important. Then I think we were both a bit shaky throughout the match. That showed. We made quite a few mistakes from both ends.
"I think it was just a little bit of nerves there for the both of us to make our first final here at Wimbledon. But I feel like we were both really going for our serves. That was super important. I was trying to really stay on top of my serve, was struggling a bit there. But holding serve was just going to be super important.
"In the third set I knew that I was going to really have to go for it. Her level just kept increasing and getting better and better throughout the match. So to be able to come on top, I knew that I wasn't just going to win off of her mistakes. I really had to bring my game and do as much as I could, especially when it came to being aggressive."
