Square Enix has released a brand new trailer for a 25-year-old game that originally launched on the PSOne.

Final Fantasy 9 is one of the all-time great role-playing games, and is often listed as the best game in the entire series.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, publisher Square Enix has released a new cinematic trailer celebrating the retro gaming classic.

You can watch the new Final Fantasy 9 trailer below.

According to the trailer description, Final Fantasy 9 has sold 8.9 million copies since launching back in 2000.

"In a world reminiscent of a picture book, this sweeping narrative depicts the journey of those searching for a place to call home," reads the trailer description.

"The theme of returning to one’s roots was the driving force behind this title.

"Together, Zidane the thief, Princess Garnet, and Vivi the black mage, each with their own hopes and dreams, embark on an epic adventure, drawn ever by the light of the crystal."

Needless to say, the release of the trailer has led to renewed speculation that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is on the way.

Writing in the comments section, one fan said: "If they announce a remake, I'll be happier than Quina in a swamp full of frogs."

Another writes: "I thought this was a remake announcement for a sec."

This is followed by another comment calling for a remake: "Square, just in case you're not sure if there is demand for a remake from the fans: Yes, please! We would love a remake for this gem of a game!!"

Some even speculate that a remake will be announced this week, especially with the original launching on July 7, 2000.

Rumours of a Final Fantasy 9 remake picked up steam ahead of the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo insider Dark Samus Hunter previously claimed that a remake was in development for the latest Nintendo console.

"There is however the Final Fantasy IX Remake that will be coming out although I have no information on a possible bundle or limited edition at the moment," reads a Dark Samus Hunter.

The rumours would continue after Square Enix launched a Final Fantasy 9 dedicated news page to celebrate the game's 25-year anniversary.

Needless to say, the release of the new trailer will only intensify the rumours of a remake.
