Tottenham 'discuss Pochettino return' as Levy makes five-man shortlist | Football | Sport![]() Tottenham Hotspur have already discussed a potential reunion with Mauricio Pochettino after sacking head coach Ange Postecoglou on Friday, according to reports. Daniel Levy is said to be considering five candidates following the decision to dismiss Postecoglou weeks after his historic Europa League triumph. In a club statement, Spurs suggested that Premier League performance was a crucial factor in their move to part ways with the Australian boss. Postecoglou oversaw a 17th-place finish with 22 defeats before salvaging something sweet from a troublesome campaign with a 1-0 win against Manchester United in Bilbao. The Athletic claim that Tottenham are expected to decide on their new head coach next week amid preparations for the 2025/26 season. And, according to BBC Sport, five candidates, four of whom currently work in the Premier League, make up the Lilywhites' shortlist. Brentford boss Thomas Frank is said to currently be the top choice to replace Postecoglou due to his impressive work in West London. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Fulham's Marco Silva have also been touted as possible targets. The report adds that Pochettino, who currently manages the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup, is another option discussed by the power brokers. A Pochettino return would be a fairytale for many Tottenham supporters after his successful - yet silverware-less - first spell at the club. The Argentine is still often the subject of chants from the stands after guiding Spurs to second and third in the Premier League. He also took the Lilywhites to a Champions League final but suffered a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool and, five months later, was sacked. Spurs were languishing in 14th, and Levy cited "extremely disappointing" domestic results as the reason for his decision. Jose Mourinho replaced him. Pochettino boasts the highest win percentage of any manager in the club's history (54.3 per cent) and has publicly admitted his desire to return one day. However, a summer comeback is unlikely as the 53-year-old prepares to lead the USMNT into their home World Cup, shared with Canada and Mexico, next year. Tottenham would also owe the United States' soccer federation an eye-watering compensation fee to lure Pochettino back to North London. A Premier League appointment is more probable, given Frank, Silva and Glasner's presence in Spurs' current thinking. But it would be somewhat surprising if Pochettino didn't receive a second chance in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hot seat somewhere down the line. Source link Posted: 2025-06-07 01:56:59 |
