Chef's three ingredients for crispy homemade air fryer chips

Poppy O'Toole is a Michelin-trained chef who claims to be obsessed with all things potato. So, it comes as no surprise that the 31-year-old has the perfect recipe for homemade chips in the air fryer with tips and tricks to make sure that each come out crispy and delicious every time.

The best-selling cookbook author shared her recipe on TikTok for 4.8 million fans. She claims that this is "one of the easiest recipes to do in an air fryer" and the method only involves three ingredients - potatoes, oil and salt.

First, peel your potatoes and slice them into batons - go thicker for chips and thinner for fries. Then, add them into a bowl as Poppy claims it is easier to season them this way.

Seasoning will be essential to elevating your spuds into tasty chips that will pair perfectly as a side with most meals or simply enjoyed on their own as a snack. In Poppy's recipe, she uses a tablespoon of vegetable oil and "a good sprinkling of salt" for some classic chips, but you could use anything to create different flavours.

There are dozens of combinations that can bring different flavours to your chips. Add some Chinese Five Spice to create a salt and pepper fakeaway, try Italian herbs for a fresh and aromatic side dish, or combine multiple herbs and spices to create your own signature blend.

Adding a light coating of oil to fries before seasoning or cooking them, especially when using an air fryer, helps the seasoning adhere more effectively and creates a crispier texture. The oil acts as a carrier, allowing the seasoning to stick to the fries' surface.

Additionally, oil can contribute to a more even cooking process, ensuring a crispier exterior. Back to Poppy's thicker chips, the chef puts the entire batch straight into the air fryer at 180C for 15 minutes.

Then, once that time has passed, she gave the basket a shake and put her chips back in for another 15 minutes. She said: "It's half an hour, all in, for golden, crispy, delicious, fresh potato chips or fries."

Why should I be using an air fryer to cook chips?

Air frying chips offers several benefits compared to traditional deep frying, including lower fat and calorie content and less oil consumption. It also allows for a crispy, golden exterior without excessive oil.

These popular kitchen gadgets use hot air circulation, requiring minimal or no oil, resulting in lower fat and calorie intake compared to deep-fried chips. One 2015 study demonstrated that food cooked using an air fryer was substantially lower in fat.

BBC Good Food reported that this "healthier approach" is better for our bodies compared to traditional food frying methods which have been shown to contribute to weight gain and heart disease. Further studies also suggest that using an air fryer reduces the presence of a compound called acrylamide, a known carcinogenic chemical formed when starchy foods like potatoes are cooked at high temperatures (above 120C).
