Swap Sangria for drinks loved by Spanish locals this summer




Sangria is often the first thing that comes to tourists’ minds when thinking about what to drink in Spain, but there are other beverages that locals love even more.

The wine-based punch traditionally includes wine – white or red – as well as chopped fruit and a sweetener like sugar. Some recipes use brandy, orange liqueur or other spirits and juices, such as lemonade or orange juice.

Citrus fruits, including oranges and lemons, are common but different fruits are used as well, like apples, pears and berries. Although the origins of sangria can be traced back to Spain, it also can be found in the UK and people have even taken to making their own at home.

However, while tourists may strongly associate sangria with summers on the Spanish coast, turns out locals may have a very different idea of what to drink in the summer.

Devour Tours is a tour agent that helps people eat and drink like a local in various countries across Europe and North America. It recently shared a video on Instagram listing six drinks to have in Spain instead of sangria.

1.Tinto de Verano

First up is Tinto de Verano, which is what the locals “really drink”, according to Devour Tours. It’s a combination of red wine and lemon that “always hits the spot.”

The name of this cocktail translates to “red wine of summer" in Spanish. It is a cold drink that is similar to sangria.

2. Kalimotxo

Kalimotxo is a drink consisting of equal parts red wine and a cola-based soft drink. The tour agent admits that it “might sound weird” but insists that it actually tastes nice.

A recipe for this alcoholic drink can be found on the allrecipes website where it is said that the drink is served “everywhere” in the Basque region of Spain. It’s traditionally served in a tall glass over ice with a slice of lemon.

3. Rebujito

Devour Tours’ next recommendation is rebujito, a cocktail that blends fino sherry with mint and lemon lime soda. It is the “official drink of Seville’s spring fair.”

The beverage was invented in Andalusia, a region in Peninsula Spain bordering the country’s southern coast. It is thought to taste similar to a sherry cobbler.

4. Clara

Clara is one part Spanish beer and another part lemon soda and is described as “perfect for a hot day.” It is a popular summertime drink and is sometimes called a shandy.

It is described as “light enough to drink on a hot summer day, without being too intoxicating," as per The Spruce Eats.

5. Vermouth

Vermouth is “all the rage” in Spain. Devour Tours suggests trying a local variety with a slice of orange and an olive.

This beverage is an aromatised wine known for its botanical flavours. Barcelo.com states that the “most common places to sip on the best vermouth Spain has to offer are the two main cities, Barcelona and Madrid along with a string of coastal towns and cities.”

6. Sherry wine

Devour Tours’ final recommendation of what to drink in Spain instead of sangria is sherry wine, also known as Vinos de Jerez. The tour agent said: “We promise these wines are anything but boring.”

Sherry is a fortified wine produced from white grapes grown around the city of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain. It typically has nutty, dried fruit and saline notes.
