How to deter pigeons for good with 1 kitchen ingredient they hate

Pigeons are common urban birds that can quickly become a nuisance when their population grows out of control. In the UK, pigeons seem to be everywhere you go, and if you find them on your roof or fence, chances are, you’ve heard them too. Not only are pigeons notoriously noisy, but they can create a whole lot of mess and expensive damage.

What’s more, their faeces can carry diseases and draw in pests such as flies and rats to your property, which can leave you with yet another problem. Finding safe and humane methods to deter pigeons is essential to maintain a clean garden and property without causing harm to the birds. As pigeons have a fantastic sense of smell, experts at Pest Pointers recommend gardeners use this to their advantage. One particular scent they recommend opting for is cinnamon.

Smelling cinnamon may bring back cosy memories of hot drinks or yummy desserts being baked in your kitchen, but for pigeons, “the scent of cinnamon is not so fantastic or appealing”.

The pros explained: “Pigeons detest the scent of cinnamon primarily due to its pungent and spicy scent.

“The aroma of cinnamon can irritate the sinus of a pigeon and cause it to stay away for good.

You can mix the cinnamon with some water in a spray bottle. Then, apply the spray to the areas where you tend to see the pigeons lurking.

They added: “Kick back and watch as the cinnamon effect deters the pigeons from coming any closer.”

Experts at Pigeon Control London also recommend using cinnamon. They said: “Cinnamon has a pungent smell that pigeons find nasty and unpleasant.

“Sprinkling cinnamon powder or using cinnamon essential oil can deter pigeons from roosting.”

Another common household product to use as a pigeon deterrent is vinegar. People use this for a multitude of purposes, so it is super useful to have in your home.

Pest pointer experts said: “Pigeons are deterred by vinegar because the scent disturbs their sense of smell. White vinegar may be more effective than other types, such as apple cider vinegar, due to its pungent aroma.”
