Novak Djokovic cruises past Cam Norrie at French Open as Serb hits major milestone | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic got up close to the Champions League trophy for the second time in 24 hours - and now is only three wins from a record 25th Grand Slam win after knocking out Cam Norrie.

The Serbian superstar and Milan fan was unhappy to play the Saturday night session here and miss Paris Saint-Germain’s crushing victory over Inter Milan.

So as compensation he went to the special trophy ceremony for the new European champions at the Parc des Princes on Sunday night. Star striker Ousmane Demeble brought the trophy into Court Philippe-Chatrier before the start of this fourth round tie.

And Djokovic, despite again needing treatment for blisters, lifted his game as usual against Norrie to win his 100th match at the French Open 6-2 6-3 6-2 in two hours and 14 minutes.

He has now won all six matches against the British No.3, including the 2022 Wimbledon semi-final. After his triumph, Djokovic, who has yet to drop a set, said: “Congratulations to PSG! I feel good. I know that I can play better but I’ve played 12 sets and won 12 sets so everything looks for the time being.

“Winnibng 100 matches here is very good, very beautiful but one more will be better. “Obviously this tournament is not finished for me. We keep going and hopefully win another game here in two days.”

Asked about attending PSG’s victory party last night, he said: “It was an incredible season for PSG. To all the Parisiens who support PSG - to my friend Nasser - it was very important for this country, for the city, for PSG to win the Champions League. I remember I was playing during the Champions League final so it was very difficult to get back to my hotel. The streets were quite something!”

The three-time champion here will now face Alex Zverev in the last eight after Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor was forced to retire during the second set.

Norrie, who is back up to world No.60 in the live rankings, will now head home for the grasscourt season after his best ever French Open.

He is the fourth British man in the Open era to reach the fourth round of all four Grand Slam following Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman and Andy Murray.

But there was never much hope of Norrie going much further in the claycourt Grand Slam as Djokovic extended his four-year unbeaten record against Brits since losing to Dan Evans at Monte Carlo in 2021.

Norrie’s opening service game, which included a 25-shot rally ended by a Djokovic drop shot, saw him broken for the Serb to go 2-0 up. The British No.3 immediately broke back when the Serb’s backhand hit the net on the second break point. But the rollercoaster opening to the match saw a third consecutive break when Norrie sliced his backhand wide after retrieving a drop shot and he led. 3-1.

Djokovic had treatment on the blisters on his right foot at the changeover at 5-2 - and he returned to court to take his first set point after 40 minutes when Norrie steered his short backhand into the net.

These two had a spat at the 2023 Rome Masters when Djokovic came out late for their match - and Norrie hit him in the ankle with a smash.

The British No.3 insisted they had got on fine since but there was no love lost between the pair on court and none of the usual Serb’s applause for good shots for opponents.

The British left-hander took a bathroom break - and returned to win eight of the first nine points of the second set including breaking Djokovic to love.

But the Serb, who looked momentarily rattled, quickly broke back and saved a big break point in the seventh game when Norrie’s hurried backhand found the net to lead 4-3.

The former world No.8 then took his own medical timeout for treatment on his left foot. He was then broken in the next game after pulling a backhand into the sidelines.

Serving for the second set at 5-3, he took his second set point when Norrie sent a forehand return long and the end was nigh.

Norrie held his opening service game but hardly won a point as Djokovic broke twice more - for a total of seven - to race into a 5-1 lead. The Scot won one final game on his serve before Djokovic took his first match point with a service winner.
