Expert warns to never pour this one drink down your drain | UK | News

Warm weather can worsen the smell of drains, as experts issue advice on how to prevent them from clogging in the first place. Domestic drain repairs can cost up to a staggering £400, with the campaign group Unblocktober estimating that England and Wales’ total repair bill to be £500million. Saga home expert Anna Thunstrom and Jacob Larkin, spokesperson for Unblocktober, revealed how bad drain habits are impacting the health of the pipes.

For those who love a morning coffee, it’s bad news as Ms Thunstrom reveals that the hot drink is one of the main causes for clogged drains. “Coffee grounds have always been a drain clogger, but more people have taken to brewing coffee at home since the pandemic,” she said. “It means more coffee grounds are going down the sink, which can clump together and cause blockages.”

In recent years, the home experts say that vapes have been a culprit in causing damage to drains as Brits have taken to flushing certain parts down the loo. “The rising number of vape users is unfortunately reflected in our drains. Disposable vape cartridges and e-cigarette butts are being flushed, which don’t break down and clog drains,” Mr Larkin says.

Oil from self-care products is a more commonly used product clogging domestic pipes. Oil-based skin and hair products with ingredients like palm and coconut oil contribute to fatbergs and blockages, which put pressure on drains.

In instances where it is not possible to avoid putting waste down the drain, such as oil, Mr Larkin recommends " blotting off the excess before rinsing.”

“It’s worth opting for lighter alternatives too, like argan or jojoba oil,” he added. “It’s not about avoiding oils entirely but using them more mindfully and choosing lighter formulations whenever possible.”

Chemical drain cleaners from the supermarket break down grease, hair, and waste by creating a reaction that generates heat, dissolving blockages.

However, Ms Thunstrom cautions against overuse: “Though these might seem like a quick fix, most contain strong alkaline or acidic chemicals and overuse can sometimes do more harm than good in the long run. It can erode metal and plastic pipes, leading to pipe corrosion, and worsen blockages if it doesn't fully clear and hardens inside pipes.”

For grease-based clogs, the experts suggest using boiling water. A baking soda and vinegar solution also creates a natural reaction that can help dissolve buildup. For hair or solid debris build up, using drain snakes or plungers can help.
