What we learned from Merseyside Police press conference on Liverpool parade crash | Football | Sport




Merseyside Police have held a press conference and provided updates on today's harrowing events in Liverpool. Representatives of the force, North West Ambulance Service, Liverpool City Council and the Fire and Rescue Service all addressed the media after a car hit a number of fans during the club's Premier League trophy parade earlier today.

The briefing lasted several minutes. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Simms began by sneding thoughts to all those involved in the "horrific incident," and thanked the emergency servies for their response. She also said special officers had been put in place to offer support to families, and appealed to people not to spread misinformation online.

How many people have been injured?

Dave Kitchin, of the North West Ambulance Service, confirmed that 27 people had been take to hospital for treatment following the crash. A further 20 were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

He also confirmed that two people had sustained serious injuries. One of those is one of the four children hurt in the incident. Kitchin also said a number of people had gone to hospital off their own accord to het injuries checked.

Four people stuck under the car

Nick Searle, of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, explained: "We immediately mobilised three fire engines to Water Street and were in attendance in four minutes.

"On arrival, the crews were met with numerous injured people and four persons trapped under a vehicle. Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed three adults and one child from beneath and passed them to our ambulance service colleagues."

Arrested man was the driver

Earlier today, Merseyside Police confirmed that a 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Despite online speculation the individual detained was not the driver, Simms said: "The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested. We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle."
