Lando Norris apologises to Jenson Button for comments after Monaco GP | F1 | Sport

Lando Norris issued an immediate apology to Jenson Button, who spoke to the McLaren driver in the moments after his Monaco Grand Prix victory. Norris shouted, "Monaco baby!" over his team radio after winning the race, though Button claimed that he stole the phrase from the 2009 champion.

On the year of his title triumph, Button won the Monaco GP, finishing ahead of his Brawn team-mate Rubens Barrichello and the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. The Brit iconicly shouted, "Monaco baby" to celebrate his win, with Norris repeating that same phrase 16 years later.

"It feels amazing," Norris said. "It's a long, gruelling race, but good fun. We could push for much of the race. The last quarter was stressful with [Charles] Leclerc behind and Max [Verstappen] ahead, but we won in Monaco.

"This is what I dreamed of when I was a kid, so I achieved one of my dreams. I think it was you [talking to Button], I saw you in front of my car before the start and I thought, if JB's here now... he's my good luck charm."

Button then put Norris on the spot and told him that he originally coined the term, to which the new champion replied: "Is 'Monaco, baby', yours? I apologise!

"The worst bit was the end. I felt quite under control the whole race but Max was backing it up a little bit and I knew Charles had opportunities. I tried to back off Max so I could push when I needed to. I'm very happy, my team are very happy. Therefore we're going to have a wonderful night!"

Norris took the lead with just one lap remaining, as race leader Verstappen waited until the final moment to take the second of his mandatory pit stops, a new rule brought in for Monaco this year.

He slipped down to fourth, behind Leclerc and Oscar Piastri, having hoped for a safety car to be brought out in the last remaining laps - only to be denied.

Last year's winner, Leclerc, was bumped up to second and said: "At the end of the day, we lost the race yesterday. We should have done a better job. Lando did a better job this weekend and deserved the win. I realised a childhood dream last year, not this year, but considering everything it was a lot above our expectations.

"I thought being in the top 10 would be a challenge, at the end we are second and very close to P2. It has been a good weekend overall, but I wish I won."

Piastri added: "Obviously the win would have been better. It's been a tricky weekend, from practice through to qualifying. We were close, but not quite close enough.

"Pretty happy with that overall, obviously some things to look at for when we come here next year but we got points on the board and another podium at Monaco, so it's not all bad. If this is a bad weekend, it's not going too badly at all. Well done to Lando for a great weekend and for Charles for being as quick as usual."
