Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly spoken to his players at the club's training ground about his own future and a potential exit for Alejandro Garnacho. The 20-time English champions left Bilbao in midweek with their tails between their legs following a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

It all but ended their campaign, given their final league match of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday now has nothing riding on it from a United perspective. But the fallout from the defeat looks set to continue into the summer, with Garnacho one of the United players who could be heading for the exit door.

The Athletic have reported that during a behind-closed-doors meeting, Amorim told Garnacho that he's free to find a new club this summer. It comes after the Argentine international blasted Amorim's treatment of him during the aftermath of United's Europa League final defeat, criticising the amount of playing time he was given in the showpiece event against Spurs.

Garnacho started the match on the bench and said afterwards: “Our performance was s***** and now we lose the final. We can't beat anyone in the league. Until the final, I played every round helping the team, then the final arrives and I play 20 minutes. I don’t know... The final, the season, the whole situation of the club… I will try to enjoy the summer and then we will see what happens.”

Conversely, Amorim isn't expected to walk away from the club in the summer, with the ex-Sporting manager reportedly telling the squad during the Carrington debrief he was sticking around for the foreseeable future. Amorim raised eyebrows after the final defeat when he revealed he'd be happy to walk away from United, if that's what the owners and the fans wanted.

Speaking on Wednesday night, he said: "If the board and the fans feel I'm not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit again. I am confident in my job. As you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things. In this moment, I am not here to defend myself. It's not my style. I have nothing to show to the fans. In this moment [I need] a little bit of faith."

United are yet to hit the 40-point mark in the Premier League and will finish the season at least 41 points behind champions Liverpool. Amorim has won just 16 of his 41 matches in charge of the Old Trafford outfit, but despite his struggles since arriving from Portugal, he appears to have the support of the United dressing room.

When quizzed on Amorim's credentials, defender Luke Shaw insisted he's the right man to take the club forward. The Englishman explained: "I can say 100 per cent right now he's the right man. Results have not been good at all. I've been here for a long time now and been through different managers. Ruben, for me, I talk on my behalf and I can talk on behalf of all the players, he is 100 per cent the right manager to take us back to where this club should be.
