Towels will remain fluffy for longer with these 4 easy laundry tips

There’s no better feeling than plush, fluffy towels which are luxurious to the touch and comfortable on the skin. By knowing how to effectively wash your towels the right way it can help keep your bathroom linens to last the test of time and best of all, retain their fluffiness. Knowing how to wash your towels correctly will also help save you money in the long as you don’t need to be constantly replacing them.

The key when it comes to fluffy towels boils down to its fibres and how they’re treated, with a laundry expert providing her top three tips to help keep your towels soft and smelling fresh. Soft, fluffy towels can be your reality with the former principal scientist at Procter & Gamble, Mary Johnson, offering her key expertise on the matter.

When it comes to towels and your washing machine, Johnson advises to “add towels to the washer and avoid overloading the washing machine".

She explained: “Towels are heavy and will take a toll on your machine, plus they might not wash and rinse correctly if everything is packed in.”

Johnson’s next tip involved the detergent used when washing these towels to keep them fluffy and new and stresses the importance of how a little goes a long way.

She said: “Add no more than the recommended amount of detergent on the product's packaging for a full load of towels in a high-efficiency machine.

“Any more might cause a build-up that limits absorbency.”

After you have washed these towels there are other essential tips to keep in mind when it comes to drying.

“Once they're laundered, shake the towels out before drying,” explains Johnson.

“If you throw them into the dryer all bunched up, they may take longer to dry and could retain stubborn creases. Next, place the towels in the dryer with wool dryer balls.

“To prevent overheating—which can tighten the fibers, making them stiffer and less absorbent—dry towels together on a low setting.”

According to Johnson, any new towels bought should be immediately tossed into the washing machine.

This helps to remove any chemicals which manufacturers often use in order to create the illusion of fluffiness.

By washing these new towels, you can also “help reduce lint and any musty smells”.
