Shower screen limescale will disappear in minutes if you ditch vinegar

It would be nice if shower screens stayed as crystal clear and unblemished as the day they're cleaned. Eventually, and always sooner than you'd like, the screens become cloudy with stains or limescale.

There isn't yet a magical cleaning product that keeps them stain-free forever. Typically, a DIY mix of vinegar and water is often touted as a good fix, but there's one answer you may not have tried that experts recommend. The clue is in the name: the magic eraser.

According to House Digest, the Magic Eraser, which is a melamine sponge, does the hard work of clearing up stains without leaving a vinegary smell in its wake.

"Melamine sponges like the Magic Eraser are really good at doing the impossible," said the publication. "It's a unique type of sponge that can remove grime, stains, and caked-on dirt from nearly any surface."

The sponges replace the need for cleaning with vinegar, they add: "With these, no need to spend money on fancy products or even make a DIY vinegar cleaning solution from scratch."

Abraisive but soft enough to work on glass, magic erasers are perfect for the job.

As the pros explained: "Magic Erasers work particularly well with hard water stains, which are concentrations of minerals like calcium.

"These minerals stay behind when water evaporates and sit on top of surfaces, giving them that white stained look. Because mineral buildup doesn't penetrate the surface, it can be removed effectively with melamine's abrasive effect."

With these nifty tools, all you need to do is add water. They remove marks and stains like caryons from walls, burnt-on food on hobs, and scuffs on various household surfaces.

Brands including Flash, Elbow Grease, and Scrub Daddy sell their own versions.

Generally, they cost about 50p to £1.50 for one sponge. At B&M, Elbow Grease's three-pack of magic sponges are £1.50 whilst  Flash Magic Erasers are pricier at £3 for a pack of two from Sainsbury's.

And vinegar still has its place as a cleaning staple. Wiping the shower weekly with vinegar can help slow down the build-up of stains and limescale so you don't have to clean as much – ideal.
