Crystal Palace win FA Cup with fans in tears over club's first trophy | Football | Sport

The red and blue half of Wembley exploded in joy and disbelief as Crystal Palace beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup and lift the club's first major trophy in 164 years on Saturday night. There were incredible scenes among the south London club's players and fans after full-time as Oliver Glasner's side made history with a 1-0 win against City courtesy of Eberechi Eze's goal.

Eze's side-footed finish from a Daniel Munoz cross in the 16th minute sent the Palace end into raptures and ultimately delivered glory for the Eagles. Dean Henderson was equally as crucial under the iconic Wembley arch. He saved an Omar Marmoush penalty and certified himself as a Palace legend by denying Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Claudio Echeverri, among others, in a superb performance.

The goalkeeper was, however, fortunate not to be sent off in the first half for clearly handling the ball outside the box. After writing history, Henderson told the BBC at full-time: "It's incredible. We had a feeling it would be our day today. We had a game plan, we executed it and we deserved this so much. I lost my dad at the start of the season.

"I'll miss him here today but he was with me for every kick of the ball today. I dedicate that win to him." On the penalty save, he added: "Haaland might have stepped up, I wasn't sure which way he'd go. He gave it Marmoush and I knew which way he was going, I knew I'd save it."

Henderson palmed the ball out of Haaland's reach in the first half and could have been dismissed but was spared by VAR. Explaining the controversial decision on the BBC, Gary Lineker said: "We've been in contact with VAR and they said, 'The direction Haaland was going made it a possible, but not an obvious, goalscoring opportunity.'"

Palace were ultimately worthy winners as they frustrated a City side now resigned to their first trophyless campaign since 2016-17. Pep Guardiola's team, who also lost the FA Cup final 12 months ago to Manchester United, had almost 80 per cent possession and completed over three times as many passes as Palace.

But after hitting City on the break to make it 1-0, Glasner's charges defended phenomenally, throwing their bodies in front of the ball and surviving an agonising 10 minutes of second-half added time to help secure the biggest moment in Palace's history - and Europa League football at Selhurst Park next season.

Goalscorer Eze said to the BBC: "This is special man. I don't even know what to say. I'm just grateful. Thank God, only God could do this. We're facing a team that have been the best team in the world for how long? To show that type of spirit and that type of energy... Only God.

"They keep the ball so well, you've got to work so hard to get anything from them. When you get up there into their box, you have to take the chance and make it count. I'm thankful for God that it went in today. It's not easy. It's hard to use the right words."
