Experts say gardeners should stop mowing lawns this month for one important reason. By not mowing your lawn in May, you’ll have the chance to protect bees and butterflies. So-called “No Mow May” means you’ll have to let your lawn grow for a month - don’t worry if it looks unkempt.

According to Woman and Home, bees and butterflies are struggling, but even a small patch of wildflowers can make a big difference, and leaving your grass to grow could help. Plantlife's No Mow May campaign urges people to lock their lawn mowers away for an entire month and let nature take the reins for just a few weeks.

If you set out to try this challenge, make sure to keep an eye out for the bees and other insects which may find a home in your garden.

One woman who undertook the experiment for Woman and Home said it has completely changed her garden, and she has kept the longer lawns.

Not only does it save time and money on mowing and maintenance, but it also promotes biodiversity, improves soil health, and prevents erosion. 

If you’re looking to make your garden better for pollinators, there are plenty of ways you can do this.

For example, one way is to add Erysimum, a pretty type of wallflower often loved by bees and butterflies.

Another way you can cater your garden to insects is to add lavender.

One method which has increasingly been used by councils is to create a wildflower patch.

You can purchase wildflower mixes, which will help you grow a varied and colourful array of flowers that insects are guaranteed to love.

No Mow Way is a great way to support local wildlife and to add some character to your garden,n making it a hotspot for insects.

Since the 1930s, the UK has lost around 97% of its wildflower-rich meadows, reports Woman and Home.

With many gardeners keen to take it upon themselves to encourage them back, it’s a great way to help out pollinators.
