Baked beans are a common things to have in many British cupboards and they are enjoyed by many Brits every day. Baked beans normally come in a tin with a sweet tomato sauce and can be heated up quickly to enjoy over buttered toast or to have with a full English breakfast. There are many things you can add to your baked beans to change the flavour, including these two unexpected ingredients.

Food blogger The Pioneer Woman shared her baked bean recipe and revealed that she "never knew baked beans could be this good". The two unexpected ingredients that she adds to her baked beans are barbecue sauce, which she says gives it a "tangy" flavour, and brown sugar. Both bring different elements to the baked beans but both are worth including, she explains. In a recipe shared on her website, she reveals how exactly she makes her baked beans, incorporating them with bacon for the best results.

For this recipe, she uses eight slices of bacon, a medium chopped onion, half a medium green pepper, three cans of pork and beans (you can just use a can of baked beans here), 3/4 cup of barbecue sauce, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of distilled or cider vinegar and two tablespoons of dry mustard.

To start, she fries the bacon followed by the onion and pepper after taking the bacon off the pan. She then adds in all of the other ingredients after the vegetables have been frying for five minutes.

Then, she pours the bean mix into an oven-proof pan. She tops that with bacon and cooks for around two hours. The cooking blogger suggests to let the beans stand after cooking them so that the meal can thicken before serving.
