Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 8 is 'one of the greatest action movies ever' | Films | Entertainment

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, part 2 of 2023’s Dead Reckoning, is finally arriving in cinemas later this month.

Tom Cruise has been in London promoting the eighth instalment in his action spy franchise.

And now the first reactions are in ahead of tomorrow’s reviews for what could be the last impossible mission for Ethan Hunt.

Critics have been gushing over the film’s visuals and action sequences in this almost 3-hour behemoth.

Variety
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning rips! Loved it. An exhilarating adrenaline rush for the head & heart & immersive, awe-inducing stuntacular of the highest order. McQ, Tom Cruise & Co have crafted the gold standard - a brilliant, bold actioner for the ages. See it BIG & LOUD.

The Hollywood Handle
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning stands as one of the greatest action movies of all time. The tension, stunts, direction, editing, everything borders on perfection. Tom Cruise delivers yet another legendary performance, and the production value is simply insane. If you thought you’d seen it all in this franchise, this redefines what’s impossible. An absolutely mind-blowing experience.

Coming Soon
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is stunning. It starts more as a dark, grim sci-fi thriller before eventually delivering the action-adventure you expect. Cruise is as fantastic as ever. It uses WAY too many flashbacks and the pace is imperfect, but the finale OWNS.

Draft Movie Pod
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is everything you want out of an action movie and oh so much more. It is THE movie event of the year - the most insane stunts I’ve ever seen and the most heart an M:I movie has ever had. It is why you see movies, plain and simple. 5 stars.

ReelBlend
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is a love letter to fans who just rewatched the entire series. It ties the entire series together as one story rather than 8 entries. First time I’ve cried in the series. Plane sequence is one of cinema’s greatest stunts. I loved it.

But not everyone was sold, with some finding it too long, lacking action and a little dull.

Gizmodo
Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning is oddly the least action forward entry in the franchise. It’s long, it’s plotty, it’s repetitive, but when those scenes do hit? Holy s***. They’re incredible. So i’m pretty mixed on it overall. High highs, low lows.

The Spectator
Sad to say, as a great fan of the series, that Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, is a huge disappointment. Portentous and dull rather than exciting, and all the Lawrence of Arabia/Fail Safe allusions cannot make up for a rubbish villain, weak plot and endless retconning.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hits UK cinemas on May 21, 2025.
