Gardeners urged not to make 1 common mistake when planting sunflowers![]() Gardeners are being advised to avoid a surprisingly easy mistake when planting sunflowers this Spring. One error could mean you barely see the bright yellow faces at all, and your neighbours might be thanking you instead for brightening up their gardens. In a TikTok video, gardening expert Simon Akeroyd explained that people in UK and anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere should consider the planting position of sunflowers. As the name states, the plant turns to follow the sun as it grows, but once it stops growing, it permanently faces east towards the sun. That means if you plant your flowers on the east side of the garden, you’ll be left staring at the backs of the flowers and the yellow blooms with face straight toward your neighbour’s fence. Simon explained: "Sunflowers track the sun during the day as they grow, following the sun from rising in the east to setting in the west each day. "But once they've finished growing, their flowers will always face east to greet the morning sun all summer and attract early morning pollinators." By planting them on the west side of the garden, once they lock into their final position, it ensures they will face straight into your outdoor space. He concluded: "So if you are planting sunflowers, don't plant them on the east side of your garden, as it will be your neighbours over the fence enjoying the pretty flowers while you spend the summer looking at the back of the flower. "Plant sunflowers on the west side of your garden. That way, the gorgeous flowers face into your garden and not your neighbour's." Another gardening expert, Michael the Mediterranean Gardener, shared a tip for growing hydrangeas this Spring. In a TikTok video, he urged gardeners to take cuttings as a way to rapidly grow new blooms, and Spring is the perfect time to do so. Source link Posted: 2025-05-12 04:49:40 |
