One common household staple that's often found in the kitchen could be the key ingredient when it comes to cultivating tomatoes, even allowing for larger types to thrive. Tomatoes are known to adapt quite well in both indoor and outdoor environments, but if you think they’re an effortless plant that doesn’t require adequate attention, think again.

Fortunately, one gardener said she's found the best method for growing tomatoes, and it is said to work so well that it could also mean they thrive every single year. The gardening enthusiast, known as Hod @hey.its.hod, shared her simple tip after she used raw eggs in her garden, which she claims, ensures for a “perfect crop”.

“The egg trick for tomato plants made people so mad last year, but my tomatoes are thriving each year, so I’m gonna keep doing it,” she began the video.

Adding: “No, it does not make raccoons dig up my garden, nor does it smell like rotten eggs in my garden.”

She explained that she uses chicken eggs for this simple tomato trick, adding that her chickens “lay more than I need.”

The benefits of using eggshells in your gardens for ultimate tomato growth come down to their calcium benefits, which in turn help to prevent blossom end rot while also strengthening the plant cell walls.

In fact, the calcium carbonate found in eggshells is so powerful it's been labelled an essential nutrient for tomato plants and works so well it even reduces acidity levels in garden soil.

“The last two years that I’ve been doing this trick, my tomatoes have been perfect. I’m just going to keep doing it because it helps my tomatoes,” added Hod.

She went on to explain how the eggshell trick for tomatoes made her crops “so big” last year, they ended up falling over from their weight.

Another gardening expert echoed these claims, stating that eggshells are an “important nutrient for plants, especially vegetables and fruits.”

Elaborating on eggshells’ benefits, the gardener said on Gardening Know How: “Eggs will leach the calcium into the soil for root uptake during composting, which can conquer such problems as blossom end rot.”

She added how the eggshell tip works so well, it's even spanned many centuries with previous generations knowing “how to reuse and give back to the soil naturally”.

She wrote: “Our grandparents didn’t have access to modern formulations for soil amendment and instead relied upon composting to boost soil fertility and tilth.

“A time-honoured tradition is to place raw, uncracked eggs in the bottom of the planting hole for tomatoes. It has its benefits and its drawbacks, as we will see.”
