F1 announces major calendar news as divisive Grand Prix set for 16-year stay | F1 | Sport![]() The Miami Grand Prix will be staying on the F1 calendar until 2041 after the divisive event was handed a bumper 10-year contract extension ahead of FP1 on Friday. Until 2022, the only American representation on the F1 schedule was the beloved Circuit of the Americas, but this changed for the first season of the ground-effect regulations as open-wheel racing arrived in Miami for a street circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins NFL franchise. After bumper crowds at the inaugural running of the Grand Prix, interest in the event dipped somewhat, and the debate about the circuit's future was ignited after Stefano Domenicali committed to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which debuted to rave reviews in 2023. However, America's F1 middle child is here to stay, following a 10-year contract extension. “In just three years, the Miami Grand Prix has established itself as one of the most important and spectacular events on our calendar, an extraordinary example of quality and vision that truly represents the spirit and ambition of Formula One in the United States," F1 CEO Domenicali said on Thursday. “Extending this agreement until 2041 is a strategic milestone of enormous importance, which strengthens our presence in America and consolidates the ever-deepening bond with our fan base there, which is constantly growing and passionate like never before. “Miami is not only an extraordinary city, but also a truly global sporting hub, energetic, dynamic and culturally vibrant. All this would not have been possible without the far-sighted vision and tireless commitment of Stephen Ross and Tom Garfinkel, to whom I extend my sincere gratitude for the leadership, support and dedication with which they have helped transform the Miami Grand Prix into a world-class event.” The event's managing partner, Garfinkel, added: “Securing a 10-year extension with Formula One through 2041 is an extraordinary milestone for all of us at South Florida Motorsports, and a true testament to the hard work of our team, the strength of our partnerships, the support of our community and the growth of the sport in the United States. To have been granted this extension after only our third event speaks to what we have felt from the very beginning – the Miami Grand Prix is here to stay." This has been an important year for the F1 schedule as the 2026 calendar starts to take shape. Ahead of media day in Miami, the series announced that the Mexican Grand Prix had put pen to paper on a contract extension that runs until 2028. Mexico's extension of Grand Prix racing could coincide with the return of the track's home hero, Sergio Perez. The 35-year-old was dropped by Red Bull at the end of the 2024 campaign but has reportedly committed to a deal with the new Cadillac team for 2026. Source link Posted: 2025-05-02 20:01:33 |
